About the New Jersey CDL shifting gears test
Grinding gears fails road tests and misreading shifting questions costs written points, so this New Jersey CDL shifting gears test drills both sides. Questions cover double clutching in a non-synchronized transmission, using engine speed and road speed together to know when to shift, upshifting progressively as you build speed, downshifting before a curve or a downgrade instead of in the middle of one, and the shift patterns behind multi-speed and auxiliary transmissions.
Retarders, automatic transmissions, and the conditions where you should not use a retarder turn up as well. The principle the exam keeps testing is plain: pick your gear before you need it, not after the engine complains.
The New Jersey CDL general knowledge test is 50 questions long with an 80 percent passing score - 40 correct. Study the shifting section of the New Jersey CDL Manual, then work this 2026 shifting practice test until timing and technique finally line up.
Every question traces back to the New Jersey CDL Manual - skim the right-of-way and signs chapters before your retake.
