New Jersey DMV Test FAQ

In most states you can get a CDL at 18 for driving within your state (intrastate). You must be 21 to drive across state lines, carry passengers, or haul hazardous materials. Check your state's CDL manual for exact rules.

Yes. You first pass the knowledge tests to get a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), practice with a CDL holder in the vehicle, and in most states must hold the CLP at least 14 days before taking the skills test.

Everyone takes General Knowledge. Class A adds Combination Vehicles, and Air Brakes if your vehicle has them. Class B adds Air Brakes. Endorsements (HazMat, Tanker, Passenger, School Bus, Doubles/Triples) each add their own test - see the path picker at the top of this page.

Typically 50 questions, and most states require 80% to pass. Endorsement tests are shorter (usually 20-30 questions, same 80% bar). Your state's CDL manual lists the exact numbers.

Yes - a TSA security threat assessment (fingerprints and background check), and the endorsement must be renewed periodically. Start the TSA step early; it can take several weeks.

No. We are exam prep only: our practice tests get you ready for the state knowledge tests. Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for first-time Class A/B applicants must be completed with an FMCSA-registered training provider.

New Jersey CDL Practice Test Guide: General Knowledge & Endorsements

New Jersey packs a lot of freight into a small state, and every commercial driver here starts with the written test you see above. Work through it before you read on, then come back for a plan you can actually follow.

That written test is the CDL general knowledge exam. It asks 50 questions and requires 80 percent to pass, so you need 40 right. The FMCSA sets that bar at the federal level, and it holds in all 50 states. Because this same exam earns you the Commercial Learner’s Permit, a New Jersey CDL permit practice test is general knowledge practice under another name. Drivers headed for class A, B, or C all take this one written test, and the class comes from your vehicle and skills test rather than the written questions.

The questions cover pre-trip inspection, basic control, shifting gears without grinding, keeping safe space and speed, reading hazards, and reacting to emergencies. The New Jersey Commercial Driver License Manual from the New Jersey MVC lays it all out, and running the New Jersey CDL practice test above alongside that manual shows you what still needs work. Treat each attempt as a sample CDL exam and study the reasoning behind every answer.

Where you drive in New Jersey points straight to your next endorsements. Port Newark and the wider NY/NJ port complex run on combination rigs, so Combination Vehicles and Air Brakes come up fast for container haulers. The dense warehousing and last-mile distribution around the Turnpike keep box trucks and straight jobs moving, and regional lanes on I-95 sometimes call for Doubles and Triples. The chemical and petroleum plants along the corridor mean Tanker and HazMat work is never far off, and each of those carries its own separate knowledge test.

Once your scores are steady and you know which endorsements fit your route, schedule your CDL skills test with the New Jersey MVC and bring the right vehicle for the class you are chasing.
