Ohio DMV Test FAQ

In most states you can get a CDL at 18 for driving within your state (intrastate). You must be 21 to drive across state lines, carry passengers, or haul hazardous materials. Check your state's CDL manual for exact rules.

Yes. You first pass the knowledge tests to get a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), practice with a CDL holder in the vehicle, and in most states must hold the CLP at least 14 days before taking the skills test.

Everyone takes General Knowledge. Class A adds Combination Vehicles, and Air Brakes if your vehicle has them. Class B adds Air Brakes. Endorsements (HazMat, Tanker, Passenger, School Bus, Doubles/Triples) each add their own test - see the path picker at the top of this page.

Typically 50 questions, and most states require 80% to pass. Endorsement tests are shorter (usually 20-30 questions, same 80% bar). Your state's CDL manual lists the exact numbers.

Yes - a TSA security threat assessment (fingerprints and background check), and the endorsement must be renewed periodically. Start the TSA step early; it can take several weeks.

No. We are exam prep only: our practice tests get you ready for the state knowledge tests. Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for first-time Class A/B applicants must be completed with an FMCSA-registered training provider.

Ohio CDL Practice Test Guide: General Knowledge & Endorsements

Before you book anything with the Ohio BMV (Bureau of Motor Vehicles), get the written test handled, and the practice tests above are built for exactly that.

Start with the shape of the exam so nothing surprises you. CDL general knowledge is 50 questions, and a passing score is 80 percent, or 40 right out of 50. Ohio does not set that mark; the federal FMCSA does, and it is the same in all 50 states. Because this written test is what earns your Commercial Learner’s Permit, an Ohio CDL permit practice test is that same written test by another name. Drivers chasing a Class A, B, or C license all answer the very same questions, since your class is decided by the skills test and the truck you drive.

Treat each sample CDL exam here as a rehearsal rather than a pop quiz. The questions walk through pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, shifting, following distance and speed on the highway, hazard awareness, and emergency maneuvers when something goes wrong. Lean on the Ohio Commercial Driver License Manual for the reasoning behind each answer, then come back and prove you retained it.

Ohio runs on making things and moving them. Factories and sprawling distribution centers keep freight flowing across the I-70, I-71, and I-80 Ohio Turnpike routes, and warehouse-to-warehouse hauling fills the schedule for many drivers here. That reality makes the Combination Vehicles and Air Brakes tests worth serious study, since so much of the work involves pulling a loaded trailer with air-actuated brakes. Haul chemicals or fuel out of the state’s industrial belt and the Tanker and HazMat endorsements come into play. Each of those is a separate knowledge test, along with Doubles/Triples, Passenger, and School Bus.

Keep running the free Ohio CDL practice test above until 40 of 50 is automatic, then schedule your CDL skills test with the Ohio BMV. Solid preparation on the written side clears your head for the part that actually pays.
