Minnesota DMV Test FAQ

In most states you can get a CDL at 18 for driving within your state (intrastate). You must be 21 to drive across state lines, carry passengers, or haul hazardous materials. Check your state's CDL manual for exact rules.

Yes. You first pass the knowledge tests to get a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), practice with a CDL holder in the vehicle, and in most states must hold the CLP at least 14 days before taking the skills test.

Everyone takes General Knowledge. Class A adds Combination Vehicles, and Air Brakes if your vehicle has them. Class B adds Air Brakes. Endorsements (HazMat, Tanker, Passenger, School Bus, Doubles/Triples) each add their own test - see the path picker at the top of this page.

Typically 50 questions, and most states require 80% to pass. Endorsement tests are shorter (usually 20-30 questions, same 80% bar). Your state's CDL manual lists the exact numbers.

Yes - a TSA security threat assessment (fingerprints and background check), and the endorsement must be renewed periodically. Start the TSA step early; it can take several weeks.

No. We are exam prep only: our practice tests get you ready for the state knowledge tests. Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for first-time Class A/B applicants must be completed with an FMCSA-registered training provider.

Minnesota CDL Practice Test Guide: General Knowledge & Endorsements

Minnesota asks a lot of its truck drivers, and it all begins with a written test you can prepare for right now using the Minnesota CDL practice test above. Run the questions enough times and the answers become second nature.

Here is what you are working toward. The CDL general knowledge test contains 50 questions, and passing means answering 80 percent correctly, or 40 out of 50. The FMCSA sets that number, which makes it a federal standard identical from coast to coast. Since this written test is also the exam for your Commercial Learner’s Permit, a Minnesota CDL permit practice test and a general knowledge practice test cover the exact same ground. Drivers going for Class A, Class B, and Class C all take this one written test. What separates the classes is the skills test and the vehicle you climb into, not the questions on the screen.

Expect questions on pre-trip inspection, basic control, shifting, following distance, hazard awareness, and what to do when something goes wrong on the road. The Minnesota Commercial Driver’s License Manual is your study guide for all of it. Given the winters here, pay real attention to the sections on traction, stopping distance on ice, and pulling out of a skid, because those skills separate drivers who make it through January from those who end up in the ditch.

Freight here has its own character. Grain and sugar beet harvests fill the roads every fall, and the tank and hopper loads tied to agriculture make Tanker and Doubles/Triples endorsements worth holding. The Twin Cities run as a distribution hub where combination trailers move day and night, so Combination Vehicles and Air Brakes come up constantly. Up on the Iron Range, taconite and mining freight demand drivers comfortable with heavy loads, and the Port of Duluth on Lake Superior feeds bulk cargo into the same network. Passenger and School Bus endorsements round out the mix for anyone eyeing transit or district work.
