California Motorcycle Permit Test: What to Expect

In California, the motorcycle knowledge test is the written exam standing between you and your permit, which means a California motorcycle permit test and a motorcycle permit practice test are aiming at the exact same material. The California DMV pulls its questions from the California Motorcycle Handbook, and the written test runs 25 questions with 80% required to pass. Do well and you are working toward the M1 motorcycle license. The free practice tests above need no login, so nothing stops you from starting today.

None of this is about car rules. You will be tested on protective gear, the controls, braking and quick stops, swerving, cornering and countersteering, lane position, following distance, riding in traffic, and staying safe at night or in rain. Handling hazards and surface changes shows up too. And while you hold a permit, expect the usual limits, like no passengers and no riding after dark, until you upgrade to the full license.

California rides differently from anywhere else. The weather lets you ride year-round, from empty canyon roads to bumper-to-bumper freeway traffic, so your practice needs to cover both calm and chaos. Helmet law here leaves no gray area: California requires every rider and passenger to wear one, no matter your age or experience. This is also the only state where lane-splitting is legal, so understanding how to move between lanes safely genuinely matters here. On top of that, the California Motorcyclist Safety Program can waive the DMV skills test, and it is mandatory for any applicant under 21.

Treat each motorcycle practice test as a rehearsal and keep the handbook open beside you for the details you miss. Once your scores sit comfortably past 80%, book your skills test with the California DMV, or complete a CMSP course to handle that step and pick up real range experience. Consistent reps now make the written test the easy part of earning your M1.
