Louisiana DMV Test FAQ

In most states you can get a CDL at 18 for driving within your state (intrastate). You must be 21 to drive across state lines, carry passengers, or haul hazardous materials. Check your state's CDL manual for exact rules.

Yes. You first pass the knowledge tests to get a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), practice with a CDL holder in the vehicle, and in most states must hold the CLP at least 14 days before taking the skills test.

Everyone takes General Knowledge. Class A adds Combination Vehicles, and Air Brakes if your vehicle has them. Class B adds Air Brakes. Endorsements (HazMat, Tanker, Passenger, School Bus, Doubles/Triples) each add their own test - see the path picker at the top of this page.

Typically 50 questions, and most states require 80% to pass. Endorsement tests are shorter (usually 20-30 questions, same 80% bar). Your state's CDL manual lists the exact numbers.

Yes - a TSA security threat assessment (fingerprints and background check), and the endorsement must be renewed periodically. Start the TSA step early; it can take several weeks.

No. We are exam prep only: our practice tests get you ready for the state knowledge tests. Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for first-time Class A/B applicants must be completed with an FMCSA-registered training provider.

Louisiana CDL Practice Test Guide: General Knowledge & Endorsements

Before you can haul anything in Louisiana, you have to pass the written exam, and the tests above are the quickest way to find out where you stand. The CDL General Knowledge test runs 50 questions, and you need 80 percent, which works out to 40 correct answers, to pass. That threshold is a federal FMCSA standard, the same in every state, so studying here lines you up with drivers across the country.

One thing confuses a lot of first-timers. The General Knowledge exam doubles as the written test for your Commercial Learner’s Permit, so a CDL permit practice test and a CDL general knowledge test are the very same thing. Whether you are after a Class A, B, or C license, you answer this one written exam. Your class gets settled by the vehicle you drive and the skills test you take, not by these questions.

Louisiana’s freight economy tells you which endorsements to plan for. The Port of South Louisiana and the Port of New Orleans push enormous tonnage, and the petrochemical corridor along the Mississippi River keeps steady work for drivers carrying Tanker and HazMat endorsements. Offshore oil support and constant movement along I-10 add even more demand for hauling liquids and regulated loads. Each endorsement is its own knowledge test, as are Air Brakes, Combination Vehicles, Doubles/Triples, Passenger, and School Bus.

The General Knowledge material favors drivers who truly know their rig. Get comfortable with pre-trip vehicle inspection, basic vehicle control, and smooth shifting. Learn how to manage space and speed, read hazards before they develop, and react when an emergency hits, from a skid to a brake failure. Pay attention to how weight and cargo distribution change the way a loaded truck responds. The Louisiana Commercial Driver’s Guide covers all of it, and working through a sample CDL exam alongside your reading helps it settle in.

Once a Louisiana CDL practice test stops throwing you curveballs, you are ready. Keep repeating until high scores feel normal, then schedule your CDL skills test with the Louisiana OMV. The free CDL practice tests need no login, so run them as often as you like.
