Delaware Motorcycle Permit Test: What to Expect

Delaware may be small, but the path to riding legally still runs through a written exam at the Division of Motor Vehicles, which is part of DelDOT. The test material comes directly from the Delaware Motorcycle Operator Manual, and the free Delaware motorcycle permit practice test above is designed around those same topics. There is nothing to buy and no account to set up. Open it and start working through the questions.

The knowledge test has 25 questions, and Delaware sets the bar a little higher than some states: you need 80% to pass. Doing so puts you on track for a Class D license with a motorcycle endorsement. The questions focus on real riding judgment, like managing your lane position, holding a safe following distance, and executing a quick stop without losing control. You will also cover swerving away from hazards, steering through corners with countersteering, and adjusting for night riding and wet roads, all pulled from the state manual.

Delaware’s helmet rules are worth reading carefully because they are a little unusual. Riders under 19 must wear a helmet. Riders 19 and older are not required to wear one, but the law still says they must carry an approved helmet with them, and everyone, regardless of age, must wear proper eye protection. So even an older rider who leaves the helmet off still has to have one on the bike.

The riding season here is a seasonal window shaped by geography. This is a flat coastal state, so you get busy beach-town summer traffic near Rehoboth and the shore, plus open farm roads once you head inland. Rides tend to be short, and the resort areas get crowded, which puts a premium on staying visible and leaving yourself room. Managing traffic and hazards is exactly the kind of thing the motorcycle knowledge test wants you to understand.

One last reminder: your permit keeps the standard restrictions until you earn the full endorsement, meaning no passengers and no riding after dark. To build hands-on skill and confidence, the Delaware Motorcycle Rider Education program offers Basic RiderCourses, and finishing one can waive the skills test. Run the motorcycle permit practice test above until you are scoring well, then go make it official.
