About the Ohio CDL emergency stopping test
When your brakes start to fade or a circuit fails, the emergency stopping portion of the Ohio CDL air brakes test wants proof that you can bring a loaded rig down safely instead of panicking. Controlled braking and stab braking are the two methods Ohio commercial drivers are expected to describe for a 2026 air brakes exam.
Controlled braking means applying the brakes firmly without locking the wheels so the steering stays usable. Stab braking means pressing hard, releasing when the wheels lock, and reapplying once they roll again. You should also know that if the air pressure drops far enough the spring brakes will engage on their own, and that engine braking and a runaway escape ramp belong to the same emergency picture.
Rehearse these scenarios until the correct response is automatic, because a real stop gives you no time to reason it out. Review the emergency braking pages of the Ohio CDL Manual; the number of questions on the air brakes test can vary, so check the manual for the current 2026 figure.
