About the Ohio CDL foundation brakes test
Almost every commercial truck in Ohio stops with S-cam foundation brakes, and that mechanism is exactly what this section of the Ohio CDL air brakes test drills. Foundation brake questions cover the parts that turn stored air into stopping force: the brake chamber, push rod, slack adjuster, S-cam, brake shoes, and drum.
You will be asked how air pressure pushes the rod outward, how the slack adjuster rotates the S-cam, and how the cam spreads the shoes against the drum to create friction. Overheated drums fade, and worn linings or an out-of-adjustment slack adjuster stretch your stopping distance, so spotting that wear during a 2026 inspection is part of driving safely on Ohio highways.
Learn the foundation brake diagram in the Ohio CDL Manual until you can name each component and its job. Because the total number of air brakes questions is not fixed, verify the current count in your Ohio commercial driver license manual before test day.
Every question traces back to the Ohio CDL Manual - skim the right-of-way and signs chapters before your retake.
