About the Texas CDL shifting gears test
Manual transmissions still decide who passes, and the written exam tests the theory before the road test tests your hands. This Texas CDL shifting gears test covers the two methods the manual describes: shifting by engine speed using the tachometer, and shifting by road speed. The 2026 Texas CDL shifting practice test asks you to sequence a proper upshift and a proper downshift without guessing.
Double-clutching is the centerpiece. Release the accelerator, push in the clutch and move to neutral, release the clutch, let engine speed settle or rev it as the direction of the shift requires, then clutch in and select the gear. Get the order wrong on paper and you will get it wrong on pavement.
Expect items on when to downshift before a curve or a grade rather than during it, on multi-speed rear axles and range shifting, and on the risk of missing a gear on a hill. Practice this Texas CDL transmission drill until the sequence reads as one motion.
Every question traces back to the Texas CDL Manual - skim the right-of-way and signs chapters before your retake.
