About the Washington CDL air brake shut-off test
Every converter dolly and rear trailer in a doubles or triples combination has its own air supply shutoff valve, and this drill covers exactly how those valves are supposed to be set - open on the units in use, closed off entirely on any unit that isn't hooked up.
Expect questions on what happens if a shutoff valve is left in the wrong position during coupling, how to identify which valve controls which unit on a three-trailer combination, and why getting this wrong can leave a trailer without working brakes entirely. This is one of the more safety-critical pieces of doubles and triples knowledge on the Washington exam.
Work through this shutoff valve drill carefully, then confirm your understanding against the relevant section of your Washington CDL Manual. A driver who gets this wrong isn't failing a test question - they're pulling a trailer with no brakes on it.
Every question traces back to the Washington CDL Manual - skim the right-of-way and signs chapters before your retake.
