It was announced on July 24, 2026 – just ahead of National Hire a Veteran Day – and the full interagency effort kicked off the following Monday. The timing is no accident. The administration’s 2026 CDL enforcement sweep removed roughly 26,000 drivers who could not meet English-proficiency requirements and canceled about 30,000 licenses found to be improperly issued. That opened tens of thousands of driver seats – and the government wants veterans to fill them. Trucking pays an average of about $70,000 a year, and carriers openly court former service members: at Werner Enterprises, veterans already make up 15% of the workforce.
What veterans get: three real advantages
1. Skip the road test – the Military Skills Test Waiver
Veterans who operated heavy military vehicles (over 2.5 tons) within the last 12 months can apply for the FMCSA Military Skills Test Waiver and skip the behind-the-wheel skills exam entirely. This is not a pilot program – more than 40,000 veterans have already used it to get licensed, often within weeks instead of months.
2. Free CDL school through the GI Bill
Veterans with at least 36 months of service can put GI Bill benefits toward CDL training, and at approved schools the tuition cap typically covers 100% of the cost – often with a housing allowance on top while you train.
3. Start before you’re out
Service members can attend commercial driving school during their final 180 days of active duty, so the CDL is ready the day the uniform comes off.
The one thing no waiver removes: the written knowledge test
