Iowa DMV Test FAQ

In most states you can get a CDL at 18 for driving within your state (intrastate). You must be 21 to drive across state lines, carry passengers, or haul hazardous materials. Check your state's CDL manual for exact rules.

Yes. You first pass the knowledge tests to get a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), practice with a CDL holder in the vehicle, and in most states must hold the CLP at least 14 days before taking the skills test.

Everyone takes General Knowledge. Class A adds Combination Vehicles, and Air Brakes if your vehicle has them. Class B adds Air Brakes. Endorsements (HazMat, Tanker, Passenger, School Bus, Doubles/Triples) each add their own test - see the path picker at the top of this page.

Typically 50 questions, and most states require 80% to pass. Endorsement tests are shorter (usually 20-30 questions, same 80% bar). Your state's CDL manual lists the exact numbers.

Yes - a TSA security threat assessment (fingerprints and background check), and the endorsement must be renewed periodically. Start the TSA step early; it can take several weeks.

No. We are exam prep only: our practice tests get you ready for the state knowledge tests. Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for first-time Class A/B applicants must be completed with an FMCSA-registered training provider.

Iowa CDL Practice Test Guide: General Knowledge & Endorsements

Farm country runs on trucks, and in Iowa that keeps up a steady need for new CDL holders. The practice test above is your first stop, so take a run at it before you dig into this guide.

The exam you are studying for is the CDL general knowledge test: 50 questions with an 80 percent passing score, which comes to 40 correct. That standard comes from the federal FMCSA and applies the same way in every state. It also serves as the written test for your Commercial Learner’s Permit, so an Iowa CDL permit practice test and a general knowledge test are one and the same. Class A, B, and C drivers all sit for it, and your class is settled by the truck you test in and the skills exam you pass.

Focus your prep on the core subjects: inspecting your vehicle before a trip, basic control, shifting, managing space and speed out on the highway, catching hazards early, and working through emergencies such as a skid or a blowout. Read those sections in the Iowa Commercial Driver License Manual from the Iowa DOT, then use the Iowa CDL practice test above to check yourself. Score each try like a sample CDL exam so your weak spots stand out.

Iowa’s freight leans agricultural, and that shapes the endorsements worth chasing. Grain and co-op hauling from farm to elevator keeps combination rigs busy, so Combination Vehicles and Air Brakes are natural next steps. The state’s ethanol plants and liquid fertilizer loads make Tanker work common, and moving certain fuels or ag chemicals adds HazMat. Long runs along the I-80 corridor put a premium on steady space management and fatigue awareness, and regional carriers sometimes bring Doubles and Triples into the picture. Every endorsement is a separate knowledge test on top of the general one.

When your general knowledge scores hold up and your endorsements are lined up, schedule your CDL skills test with the Iowa DOT in the class of vehicle you plan to drive.
