Wyoming DMV Test FAQ

In most states you can get a CDL at 18 for driving within your state (intrastate). You must be 21 to drive across state lines, carry passengers, or haul hazardous materials. Check your state's CDL manual for exact rules.

Yes. You first pass the knowledge tests to get a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), practice with a CDL holder in the vehicle, and in most states must hold the CLP at least 14 days before taking the skills test.

Everyone takes General Knowledge. Class A adds Combination Vehicles, and Air Brakes if your vehicle has them. Class B adds Air Brakes. Endorsements (HazMat, Tanker, Passenger, School Bus, Doubles/Triples) each add their own test - see the path picker at the top of this page.

Typically 50 questions, and most states require 80% to pass. Endorsement tests are shorter (usually 20-30 questions, same 80% bar). Your state's CDL manual lists the exact numbers.

Yes - a TSA security threat assessment (fingerprints and background check), and the endorsement must be renewed periodically. Start the TSA step early; it can take several weeks.

No. We are exam prep only: our practice tests get you ready for the state knowledge tests. Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for first-time Class A/B applicants must be completed with an FMCSA-registered training provider.

Wyoming CDL Practice Test Guide: General Knowledge & Endorsements

Wyoming is a driver’s state in the truest sense. Energy runs the show here, with coal, oil, gas, and the trona mines that supply much of the world’s soda ash, and all of it has to move by truck. Add the wide-open distances, the oversized energy loads, and a winter that shuts roads without much warning, and you have a place where skill behind the wheel genuinely matters. The practice tests above are your starting line.

Get the written exam handled first. The General Knowledge test is 50 questions, and passing takes 80%, or 40 right. That figure comes straight from the FMCSA, so it is a federal standard that applies coast to coast. It doubles as the test for your Commercial Learner’s Permit, which means a Wyoming CDL practice test and a CDL general knowledge practice test are one and the same. Drivers going for class A, B, or C all sit for this single written test. Your class comes down to the skills test and the vehicle you operate, not the exam.

Give real attention to the core topics: vehicle inspection, basic control, shifting, managing space and speed, hazard awareness, and emergency response. One subject deserves extra focus out here. High winds along the I-80 corridor can push a high-profile trailer around and close the interstate outright, so understanding wind, traction, and when to shut down is not academic in Wyoming. It is the difference between finishing a run and ending up in a ditch.

The state’s energy economy shapes your next moves after the CDL permit. Hauling crude, produced water, and chemicals makes Tanker and HazMat two of the most useful endorsements you can hold, and both are separate knowledge tests. Drivers pulling combination rigs across long stretches want Air Brakes and Combination Vehicles, while Doubles and Triples pays off on the big linehaul routes. If people are your cargo, Passenger and School Bus round things out.

Read the Wyoming Commercial Driver License Manual closely, since it lays out every one of these topics in the state’s own words. When your practice scores hold, schedule your CDL skills test with WYDOT Driver Services. Wyoming runs its licensing through WYDOT rather than a DMV, so that is the office you will deal with straight through.
