About the California CDL engine compartment test
With the hood up you are looking at a short list of things that strand trucks, and this California CDL engine compartment inspection test covers each one. Oil level, coolant level and hoses, power steering fluid, the belts and their tension, the water pump and alternator, wiring insulation, and any leak that has left a stain where there should not be one.
This 2026 CDL pre-trip engine compartment practice test also drills the steering and suspension components you can reach from the front: steering box mounting and hoses, the arms and linkage, and the front springs, shocks and mounts. Examiners want the name of the part and the defect you are ruling out, not a general glance in its direction.
The California CDL Manual lists what belongs on this part of the walk-around, and it publishes how many questions the California DMV pre-trip material carries. Confirm the count there before you schedule.
Every question traces back to the California CDL Manual - skim the right-of-way and signs chapters before your retake.
