New York DMV Test FAQ

In most states you can get a CDL at 18 for driving within your state (intrastate). You must be 21 to drive across state lines, carry passengers, or haul hazardous materials. Check your state's CDL manual for exact rules.

Yes. You first pass the knowledge tests to get a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), practice with a CDL holder in the vehicle, and in most states must hold the CLP at least 14 days before taking the skills test.

Everyone takes General Knowledge. Class A adds Combination Vehicles, and Air Brakes if your vehicle has them. Class B adds Air Brakes. Endorsements (HazMat, Tanker, Passenger, School Bus, Doubles/Triples) each add their own test - see the path picker at the top of this page.

Typically 50 questions, and most states require 80% to pass. Endorsement tests are shorter (usually 20-30 questions, same 80% bar). Your state's CDL manual lists the exact numbers.

Yes - a TSA security threat assessment (fingerprints and background check), and the endorsement must be renewed periodically. Start the TSA step early; it can take several weeks.

No. We are exam prep only: our practice tests get you ready for the state knowledge tests. Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) for first-time Class A/B applicants must be completed with an FMCSA-registered training provider.

New York CDL Practice Test Guide: General Knowledge & Endorsements

New York throws more variety at a commercial driver than almost anywhere. Down in New York City and around the Port of NY/NJ, drivers thread dense delivery routes and drayage runs between terminals. Transit, charter, and school routes keep Passenger and School Bus work steady across the region. Head upstate and the Thruway, I-90 and I-87, connects manufacturing plants, farms, and warehouses. Whatever slice you are aiming for, the New York CDL practice test above gets you started on the license behind it.

The starting exam is the same for everyone. The CDL general knowledge test asks 50 questions, and you pass at 80 percent, meaning 40 correct. That number is a federal FMCSA standard, identical in Buffalo, Brooklyn, and every state line beyond New York. This written test is also the one you take for your Commercial Learner’s Permit, so a New York CDL permit practice test and a general knowledge test are one and the same. Class A, B, and C applicants all answer this single written test first. Your class is determined afterward, by the vehicle you test in and the skills exam you pass.

Lean on the practice questions above to master the fundamentals: pre-trip vehicle inspection, basic control in tight spaces, clean shifting, judging space and stopping distance, anticipating hazards, and managing emergencies such as skids and brake trouble. Pair every round with the New York State Commercial Driver’s Manual so the reasoning sticks rather than fading after one read.

Endorsements each carry a separate knowledge test, and New York’s mix makes certain ones stand out. Passenger and School Bus are in constant demand given all the transit and charter driving here. Air Brakes and Combination Vehicles cover the tractor-trailers on the Thruway and the drayage rigs at the port. HazMat and Tanker fit fuel and industrial freight, and Doubles/Triples suits the parcel and LTL carriers serving both the city and upstate.

When your scores stay above the passing line, run one more sample CDL exam to be certain, then schedule your CDL skills test with the New York DMV and get moving.
