About the California CDL seeing hazards test
Spotting trouble before it becomes an emergency is the whole point of defensive driving, and the California CDL seeing hazards test measures exactly that skill. This section presents scenarios drawn from real roadway situations to check whether a permit candidate scans far enough ahead, reads brake lights and merging traffic early, and notices the small cues that precede a bigger problem. It is one of the more scenario-heavy parts of the California CDL practice test.
Questions ask you to identify hazards forming several seconds ahead, such as a vehicle drifting in its lane, a pedestrian near the roadway edge, or brake lights rippling back through traffic on a congested freeway. The California Commercial Driver Handbook stresses scanning technique because a loaded commercial vehicle needs far more space and time to react than a passenger car, so spotting hazards early is what makes that extra space usable.
This hazard-recognition category is folded into the full 50-question California CDL general knowledge exam, which requires 80 percent, or 40 correct answers, to pass. Practice this drill until scanning ahead becomes a habit, then keep that sharp eye going through the rest of your CDL test questions and answers.
Every question traces back to the California CDL Manual - skim the right-of-way and signs chapters before your retake.
