About the California CDL railroad crossings test
Railroad crossings get their own drill in the P endorsement because a bus is required to stop where most vehicles are not. This California CDL passenger railroad crossings test works through the stop-and-listen procedure: halting no closer than 15 feet and no farther than 50 feet from the nearest rail, opening the service door and driver's window to listen, looking both directions, and only then crossing in a gear you will not need to change.
The drill also covers the crossings where a stop is not required, such as streetcar crossings and industrial spurs controlled by a flagman or an officer, and the absolute rule that you never start across unless there is room for the entire vehicle on the far side.
Rail freight and commuter lines cross bus routes all over California, so this is daily practice, not a rare event. Study it with the passenger chapter of the California Commercial Driver Handbook for your 2026 exam, and check that manual for the official question count.
Every question traces back to the California CDL Manual - skim the right-of-way and signs chapters before your retake.
