About the Florida CDL shifting gears test
Gear selection tells an examiner more about a commercial driver than almost anything else, and the written exam probes it first. This Florida CDL shifting gears test covers the manual transmission theory built into the 2026 general knowledge exam, from double clutching to knowing when a downshift is already too late.
The shifting practice questions ask about engine speed ranges and how tachometer readings guide upshifts, the timing of double clutching, why you downshift before a curve rather than in it, and why you select a low gear at the top of a grade instead of hunting for one halfway down. You will also see multi-speed rear axles, auxiliary transmissions, the risk of coasting out of gear, and the warning signs that you have missed a gear entirely.
Exam facts worth memorizing: 50 questions total, 40 correct required, 80 percent passing. Anything that trips you up belongs on a reread list from the Florida CDL Manual.
Every question traces back to the Florida CDL Manual - skim the right-of-way and signs chapters before your retake.
