About the Illinois Class A CDL exam simulator
The Illinois Class A CDL practice test is the one to master if a tractor-trailer is the goal. Use it as a Class A drivers license practice test and as a Class A permit practice test - the written stage is the same either way, and this 2026 simulation runs the full general knowledge exam that the Illinois Secretary of State gives.
What are the three types of CDL license? Class A covers a combination rated over 26,001 pounds towing a trailer over 10,000 pounds. Class B covers a single vehicle over 26,001 pounds. Class C covers smaller vehicles hauling placarded hazardous materials or carrying 16 or more passengers. Those CDL classifications are set by the vehicle and the skills test, not by a different written exam.
The written test is 50 questions with an 80 percent pass, so 40 correct. Chicago's intermodal terminals and the I-80 corridor run on Class A drivers, which makes combination-vehicle habits worth drilling alongside the Illinois CDL Manual.
Every question traces back to the Illinois CDL Manual - skim the right-of-way and signs chapters before your retake.
