About the New Jersey motorcycle group riding test
Riding with others has its own set of rules, and this set covers them. Group riding done well is organized and predictable; done poorly it is dangerous. The New Jersey Motorcycle Operator Manual describes the staggered formation as the standard way to keep space while staying together.
Questions address maintaining proper spacing so riders have room to react, positioning newer riders near the front where they can be watched, and using agreed signals to communicate turns and hazards. You will also review why a single-file line makes sense on curves and narrow roads. These are the group habits the New Jersey MVC connects to safe, courteous riding for every Class M holder.
The goal is a group that moves as one without crowding any individual rider's cushion of space. The exam remains 25 questions with an 80% pass requirement, and in 2026 group-riding questions favor riders who understand formation and communication rather than just following the bike ahead.
Every question traces back to the New Jersey Motorcycle Manual - skim the right-of-way and signs chapters before your retake.
