About the California Penalties & Points test
California tracks your driving record with a point system, and the numbers move faster than most drivers expect. Most everyday violations, like an unsafe lane change or running a stop sign, add one point. The serious stuff, DUI, reckless driving, or hit-and-run, adds two. Rack up 4 points in 12 months, 6 in 24, or 8 in 36 and the DMV can label you a negligent operator and suspend your license, with most points lingering on your record for roughly three years.
The common miss here is assuming a couple of tickets are harmless. Points stack quietly across those rolling windows, and the negligent-operator suspension is not a judge's call, it is triggered automatically once you cross the threshold. Know which offenses count as two points so a single bad night does not blindside you.
Every question traces back to the California Driver's Manual - skim the right-of-way and signs chapters before your retake.
